Nature Program
Explore the Captain's
sycamore tree and all
the different organisms
it supports by
observation and an
interactive workbook.
Then continue the walk
to the field south of
the house. The children
gain insight into
ecological and
environmental issues
from a past, present and
future perspective. They
will encounter some of
the animals that once
lived on the land.
Children continue the
walk to the large oak
tree where they learn
about fungus and algae.
Here the children also
count the rings of tree
stumps to further
discuss the environment
and historical
significance of plant
life. Next children walk
to the bird circle where
they are given
binoculars, taught how
to use them properly,
and sight birds in the
area. What supports bird
life and why these birds
live here are discussed.
After some amazing bird
watching, the children
are brought back to the
main grounds where they
rest, talk about the
day, and compare notes
in their workbook. This
is perhaps the most
rewarding element of the
Nature Walk because the
youngsters get a chance
to reflect on their own
findings and
experiences. It’s really
rewarding to see some
young children come
alive in this outdoor
experience. |
