.Capital Campaign Off to a Running Start

Nipomo, California – February 16, 2006 – Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (DANA) has kick started its capital campaign with two separate grants from Save the Mesa totaling $7,000. This money will be applied to Phase 1 of the campaign, the purpose of which is to repair damage to the Dana Adobe caused by the recent rain. Without this repair, the adobe is at risk to further and more serious damage.
“It’s essential to ensure the preservation of the Dana Adobe because it’s the most historically significant residence in San Luis Obispo County,” said Herb Kandel, President of the DANA Board of Directors. “This generous grant from Save the Mesa will help toward that goal.”
The first grant of $2,000 dollars is to be applied to emergency repair of the South wall of the Adobe, which is the most severely damaged. Save the Mesa has also pledged an additional $5,000 in funds to the DANA capital campaign contingent upon DANA raising a matching $5,000 by May 31, 2006.
The Dana Adobe was completed in 1851 by Captain William G. Dana. It was built on the 37,888 acre Rancho Nipomo, which Captain Dana received in 1837 through one of the first and largest Mexican land grants. DANA’s vision is to create a historic park with the Dana Adobe as its centerpiece. The park will provide an authentic setting in which visitors can step back in time to the days when Rancho Nipomo was in its heyday as a center of ranching and commerce. DANA is already in the process of acquiring land surrounding the adobe for the construction of the park.
“Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos has a purpose that is right in line with ours — to preserve the rural character of the Nipomo Mesa and its surrounding area,” said Marianne Buckmeyer, Save the Mesa President. “We believe that these grants will help preserve an indispensable part of that character.”
