Nipomo, California – February 22, 2006 – Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (DANA) today announced the lineup for its annual Heritage Day to be held at the Historic Rancho Nipomo on Saturday, May 20, 2006. Heritage Day is a key fund-raising event in DANA’s capital campaign, the main purpose of which is the restoration of Dana Adobe — the most historically significant residence in San Luis Obispo County. The event gives people a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in California history in an authentic setting.
“We have a great day planned in which visitors can meet and talk with people who were movers and shakers of California history in the early and mid nineteenth century,” said Kathy Kubiak, Executive Director of DANA. “These people, of course, are actually historic portrayers who have a particular interest in and knowledge of the people they portray.”
Historical figures already signed up include:
Captain William G. Dana - owner of Rancho Nipomo and builder of Dana Adobe
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Larkin - Mr. Larkin was appointed by then President Polk as his Special Confidential Agent in California
James Walker (AKA J.A. Davis) – Artist for Harper’s Weekly who reported on the Civil War.
Captain John Charles Fremont – One of the state’s first senators and was appointed a Major General in the Civil War
Captain Isaac Graham – Along with 3 partners, built the first power sawmill in California
James Beckworth – Rode with Captain John Fremont and Kit Carson during the Bear Flag Revolt which wrested California from Mexico and brought it into the U.S.
These historical figures, who are all connected in some way to Rancho Nipomo, will be joined by many other portrayers depicting various people of the times. In addition, there will be a number of other interesting attractions including demonstrations of traditional music and dancing, Vaquero style roping, Californio cooking, blacksmithing, lace making, children’s games, rug hooking, gold panning, and artifact hunting.
“History literally comes to life at Rancho Nipomo on Heritage Day,” said Heb Kandel, President of the DANA Board of Directors. “Visitors have the opportunity to step back in time to the mid eighteen hundreds and experience what it was like to live here in those days.”
