Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos Get “Minor” Contribution

Nipomo, California – April 8, 2006 – Today at their monthly board meeting, the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (D.A.N.A.) received a surprise contribution from an 8-year-old Dana Elementary School student. Emily Mangione had attended a school assembly at which a D.A.N.A. representative appeared in period costume and brought interesting facets of California history to life. Emily approached the board with $19.00, saved from her allowance and recycling of bottles and cans, and stated that she wanted to become a member of the D.A.N.A. organization.
“I was touched to say the least,” said Barbara Barber, the D.A.N.A. board member who accepted the contribution. “It’s so great to see that our educational outreach program, which can help local elementary schools teach California history in an exciting and entertaining way, is having such a positive effect.”
In addition to educational outreach programs, D.A.N.A. docents conduct living history programs at the Dana Adobe for students on field trips to Rancho Nipomo. These programs enable students to participate in a variety of learning experiences, from adobe brick making and livestock branding to tours of the history-packed Dana Adobe residence. The group expects to serve more than 500 students in 2006 alone.
“It’s this kind of experience that makes all the work worthwhile,” said Herb Kandel, D.A.N.A. board president. “Seeing kids aware of and excited by what we are doing is just as gratifying to us as major financial contributions.”
