Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos Reach Another Fund-raising Plateau
Nipomo, California – April 24, 2006 – Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (D.A.N.A.) has received a $2,500 donation from the South County Historical Society (SCHS), making D.A.N.A. eligible to pick up a $5,000 matching grant from Save the Mesa. The matching grant required D.A.N.A. to raise $5,000 between February 16 and May 31, 2006. With the SCHS donation, D.A.N.A. has exceeded the $5,000 fund-raising requirement.
“DANA shares our vision of preserving the many historical treasures we have in San Luis Obispo County,” said SCHS president Jane Line. “We’re doubly pleased that our donation will not only help in restoring the rain-damaged South wall of the Dana Adobe but also bring D.A.N.A. over the top in meeting the Save the Mesa matching grant.”
SCHS, chartered in 1976, is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the historical heritage of Avila, Shell Beach, Edna, Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande, Oceano, Halcyon, Huasna, Los Berrros, Oso Flaco and Nipomo. Currently, the society's five hundred members maintain four museums. SCHS will open its fifth and main museum, the 1902 IOOF building in Arroyo Grande, in the summer of 2006.
The Dana Adobe is a 13-room adobe residence, the construction of which began in 1837 and was completed in 1851. The adobe is distinguished as the most historic residence in the County of San Luis Obispo. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a California State Historic Landmark (No. 1033). Captain Dana erected the adobe on the 37,888-acre Rancho Nipomo, which he received in 1837 through one of the first and largest of the Mexican land grants. Much of the land immediately surrounding the adobe remains relatively intact and in its original form, preserving its geological, archeological, and paleontological significance. Continued preservation of this magnificent landscape is now a fundamental component of the D.A.N.A. mission. D.A.N.A. is in the final stages of acquiring 120 acres of land surrounding the adobe. The organization intends to create a historical park, providing an authentic setting in which visitors can step back in time to relive California’s rancho era.
“We started the ball rolling with our matching grant, and the South County Historical Society has picked it up and run with it,” said Marianne Buckmeyer, Save the Mesa president. “We’re happy to help D.A.N.A. move closer to the realization of its exciting vision. I can’t think of a better way to save the mesa.”
