D.A.N.A. Docents to Present Talk on Henry Tefft and Demonstrate Rancho-style Cooking

Nipomo, California – August 14, 2006 – Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos (D.A.N.A.) announced that Henry Amos Tefft will be the focus of the Saturday Talk at the Dana Adobe on August 26. History enthusiast and Dana Adobe docent Barbara Watson will discuss Tefft’s life and his contributions to California history. Dana Adobe docents also plan to fire up the horno, a type of outdoor oven used in California during the mid-1800s, and demonstrate rancho-style cooking before and after Watson’s presentation.

“If you’ve ever wondered who Henry Tefft was and why there’s a street named after him, you won’t want to miss this talk,” said Helen Daurio, director of docents and educational outreach for D.A.N.A. “Tefft’s list of accomplishments is amazing, especially considering that his life was cut short when he drowned at the age of 29 as he was attempting to join his pregnant wife. He was a fascinating person who achieved much during his short life.” Tefft was only 26 when he came to California in 1849. Over the next three years, he helped write the first California constitution, was elected to the state legislature, and served as a judge. His wife, Maria Josefa Dana, was the daughter of Captain William Goodwin Dana and Maria Josefa Carrillo de Dana.

The adobe will be open from 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm and the talk is scheduled for 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Dana Adobe docents will demonstrate rancho-era cooking techniques before and after the talk and offer attendees samples of bread and other food items. D.A.N.A. invites the public to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy before the talk and to participate in docent-led tours before and after.
