Choose a half day or full school day trip. We will work with you to provide the activities that are most beneficial to your class. Half day programs complete two or three rotating activities, full day programs can complete five rotating activities.

Bird Walk
Learn about the birds that live on the land around the Adobe and also the migrant birds who live here part of the year. Almost 100 species of birds inhabit the rancho at different times of the year.
| Branding Learn
what the brands were used for and how to read them. Design
your own brand. |
Barbed Wire
Learn about the invention of barbed wire; why was it needed? Who used it? Why is it considered one of the most important inventions of the 19th century?

Sketch Captain Dana's Tree
Learn about the native California Sycamore tree. Also learn about other trees and plants that grow on the rancho: native, naturalized, and invasive.

Tour of the Adobe
Learn how the Dana family lived over 150 years ago and see
the house they lived in. |
Walk
the Rancho
Learn to read a site map
and find particular locations such as the tallow vat or
where the barn stood by reading the map.

Rock
Painting
Learn
about the Chumash symbols, the colors they used and why they
painted these colors on rocks. Paint your own rock to tell a
story. |
Brick-making
Learn about the basic building material of the early California
homes and help make adobe bricks.

Chumash
stories and games Learn
how the Chumash taught their children important life skills
through stories and games and participate in some of those
games. |

Bird Walk with Corrine Ardoin
Corrine has identified over 94 different species of
birds at the Dana Adobe. She has also written a book, "Birding the
Nipomo Mesa," which is on sale at the Dana-Carrillo Adobe. Walks are coordinated through the
National Audubon Society or can be arranged for a private group. Call
for more information. |

Docent Led Tour of the Adobe
Docents are available for public
tours on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the spring, summer and fall months, and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays during the winter months. Call to confirm hours.

Hike Along the Creek with Bill Denneen
Bill Denneen leads hikes along Nipomo Creek through the
Sierra Club. These hikes are
held once a month and begin and end on the veranda of the Adobe where
the view is spectacular. Poetry
and meditation often follow. Call for time and details. |

Painting at the Adobe
Thursday Painters or other groups are welcomed at the
Adobe to paint our beautiful outdoor scenery and vista. Each artist can pick their own view to paint. A meeting area and lunch are arranged for the group following
their art session where they can exchange ideas and show what they have
painted. Call for information. |

Lunch and Tour of the Dana Adobe
Service groups and organizations are welcomed to the
Adobe for a private tour and lunch on the veranda. Our docent led tour
provides an opportunity to learn the history of the Nipomo area as well
as California history. Groups
may have lunch served to them or bring their own.

Meeting and Docent Led Tour
Service clubs and organizations may hold meetings at the Dana Adobe with a docent led tour of the Adobe provided either before or after the meeting. Call to set up.

Adult
School Class Tours
English as a Second Language, History classes or other
adult education venues can arrange a private tour of the Adobe with
activities and information that apply to learning in their field.
Teachers please call to arrange a program for your class. |

Youth
Organizations at the Adobe
Scouting, Campfire, and other youth organizations can
arrange private group activities and tours of the adobe to satisfy badge
requirements. Adobe staff will work with leaders to set up the
appropriate programs. Call for information.

Adobe Docent Guide - By Dawn Goodman, This 18 page guide includes a map of the Dana Adobe and a description of
each room and how it was used. It also contains a general history of the Adobe
designed to help train docents who might be giving tours.
